We often think that communication is essential for good cooperation. Of course, communication is vital. However, it is a consequence of other more important activities to focus on before starting a project, such as being transparent about who does what (tasks & responsibilities), having good planning, actively managing risks instead of shifting them and calling in professionals who make a plan before a project.
